Dr. Sang-Ki Rhee received his B.S. degree in microbiology from Seoul National University and M.S. and Ph. D. degrees in biotechnology from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). Subsequently, he did postdoctoral trainings at the University of New South Wales in Australia and at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the USA.
Dr. Rhee served as a research scientist for over 30 years working on the various fields of emerging biotechnologies to increase their potential values. Since 1982, he had been working at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB) by holding various key positions such as Chief Research Scientist, Research Director, Vice President and finally became President of KRIBB in 2005. In 2009, he moved to Soon Chun Hyang (SCH) University to take a full professorship and served as Dean of College of Medical Sciences. During this time period, Dr. Rhee has published more than 280 scientific articles/reviews/books and holds more than 60 patents registered or filed mainly in the field of biotherapeutics. As a prominent leader in the Korean biotechnological community, he served as President of the Microbiological Society of Korea and the Federation of Korean Microbiological Societies. Currently, he is the President-elect of the Korean Society of Microbiology and Biotechnology to serve as President in 2013.
Dr. Rhee was also the founder of BioHoldings Inc., Ltd and served as President and CEO of the company during 2000-2004. He has extensive experiences in technology licensing and transfer, business partnering and consulting for the business development of many start-up biotech companies. As CEO of the technology holding company, he has played the leading role in establishing business partnerships and strategic alliances with local and international biotech and pharmaceutical companies, consulting firms, patent & law firms, CPA firms, investment capitals, etc.
Dr. Rhee has been also very active for international cooperation. He has led many international cooperation projects with various international organizations such as UNESCAP, UNIDO, UNESCO and ASEAN. One of such international programs was Bioinformation Network in Asia (BINAsia) to establish a biotechnology foundation to connect developing countries in Asia and the Pacific Region. He has been working as a consultant or advisor to set up biotechnology policy and strategy for UNESCAP and UNIDO and also for a few Asian and African countries. He was elected as an Executive Board member of the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS) in 2011.
